Yoga, an age-old practice rooted in Indian philosophy, has evolved into a multi-faceted discipline enjoyed by millions around the globe. From its origins thousands of years ago, it has branched out into numerous styles, each offering unique benefits. Let's embark on a YouTube journey to explore these different types of yoga, their history, and their origins.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga is often considered the foundation of many yoga styles. Originating in India in the 15th century, it emphasizes physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and meditation. Hatha Yoga aims to balance mind, body, and spirit, and is an excellent starting point for beginners.

Yoga With Adriene's Hatha Yoga sequence provides a beginner-friendly introduction to this traditional style.

Vinyasa Yoga

Derived from Hatha Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga was developed in the 20th century and popularized by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. The style is characterized by its focus on the synchronization of breath with continuous flow of postures. The term "Vinyasa" translates to "arranging something in a special way," referring to the fluid transition between poses.

Boho Beautiful's Vinyasa Flow on YouTube is a dynamic sequence perfect for those seeking an energetic yoga session.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga, another derivative of Hatha Yoga, was popularized by K. Pattabhi Jois in the 1970s. It's a rigorous style comprising six series of specific postures performed in the same order, synchronizing breath with movement. Ashtanga is challenging and best suited for experienced practitioners.

Laruga Glaser's Ashtanga Yoga demonstration provides an insightful glimpse into this demanding practice.

Iyengar Yoga

Developed by B.K.S. Iyengar in the 1960s, Iyengar Yoga is characterized by its attention to detail, precision, and alignment in postures. It frequently incorporates props such as blocks, belts, and bolsters to aid practitioners in achieving correct alignment.

Yoga with Lin and Leo's Iyengar Yoga sequence showcases the meticulous nature of this yoga style.

Bikram Yoga

Bikram Yoga, founded by Bikram Choudhury in the 1970s, is a style practiced in a room heated to around 105°F with a humidity of 40%. It consists of a sequence of 26 postures and two breathing exercises performed in the same order every session.

This Bikram Yoga Class gives an insight into the hot and challenging world of Bikram Yoga.

Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan since the late 1960s, aims to awaken the 'Kundalini' energy believed to lie dormant at the base of the spine. This style involves a blend of spiritual and physical practices with chanting, meditation, dynamic breathing techniques, and physical postures.

In Kundalini Yoga with Maya Fiennes, you can experience a practice designed to awaken your spiritual energy.

developed in the late 1970s by martial arts expert and Taoist yoga teacher Paulie Zink, is a slower-paced style where postures are held for longer periods, typically from 45 seconds to two minutes for beginners, and up to five minutes or more for advanced practitioners. It aims to stretch the deep connective tissues and fascia in the body while promoting mindfulness and inner peace.

Travis Eliot's Yin Yoga session is a great way to experience this meditative practice.

Restorative Yoga

Restorative Yoga, developed by B.K.S. Iyengar, is a gentle and therapeutic style designed to promote relaxation and healing. It uses props to support the body in positions of comfort and ease, which facilitates relaxation and health. Restorative Yoga is excellent for relieving stress and promoting relaxation.

In Yoga with Adriene's Restorative Yoga sequence, you can explore the calming and healing aspects of this yoga style.

Power Yoga

Power Yoga, developed in the 1990s, is a fitness-based approach inspired by Ashtanga Yoga. However, unlike Ashtanga, it doesn't follow a fixed sequence of poses. Power Yoga classes are vigorous and physically challenging, making them popular among those who want a good sweat from their yoga session.

Bryan Jones' Power Yoga Workout is a fantastic introduction to this vigorous style of yoga.

Yoga, a rich world

The rich world of yoga offers a style for every preference, from slow and meditative to vigorous and physically demanding. Through YouTube, you can explore these diverse practices from the comfort of your own home. Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or a yoga newbie, there's a style for you waiting to be discovered. So unroll your mat, press play, and let your yoga journey begin.
