The short version
- Nothing that tracks you loads until you say yes. If you choose "Reject all", no analytics or advertising script is loaded at all, not merely blocked from storing a cookie.
- We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with anyone except the service providers named below.
- You can change your mind whenever you like using the Cookie settings link in the footer.
What we collect, and why
| What | Why | Our lawful basis | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pages you view on this site, recorded by our own first-party analytics (4 Analytics) | To see which articles are read, so we know what to write more of | Legitimate interests: understanding how our own site is used. This tool stores nothing on your device and is not used to identify you, so it does not require your consent | Aggregated statistics, kept while the site runs |
| Google Analytics data, loaded through Google Tag Manager | More detailed audience statistics | Your consent | No more than 14 months |
| Google AdSense advertising data | The advertising that pays for the hosting | Your consent | Set by Google; see their policy below |
| YouTube video embeds on our video pages | To let you watch the videos without leaving the page | Your consent, either for all videos or by clicking to load one video | Set by YouTube |
| Your name and email address if you subscribe to the newsletter | To send you the newsletter you asked for | Your consent | Until you unsubscribe |
| Your name, email address, comment and IP address if you leave a comment | To publish the comment and to deal with abuse | Your consent, and legitimate interests in moderating the site | While the comment remains published |
| Your username, email address and password if you register an account | To run the account you asked for | Performance of a contract with you | Until you ask us to delete the account |
| Web server logs, including your IP address and the page requested | Security, and diagnosing faults | Legitimate interests: keeping the site up and secure | A short period, then overwritten by our hosting provider |
Cookies and similar technologies
A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep. Under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations we may only use non-essential cookies if you agree first, and refusing must be as easy as agreeing. That is why the banner offers "Reject all" alongside "Accept all", and why nothing beyond the essentials runs until you choose.

If you allow advertising, Google also shows its own consent message about personalised advertising. That message is Google's, not ours, and it appears because Google requires it for advertising shown to people in the UK and Europe.
Only if you ask for a video
Video pages show a placeholder in place of each YouTube player. Nothing is requested from YouTube until you press "Load this video" for that one video, or "Always allow videos" for all of them. Once loaded, YouTube may set its own cookies.
Changing your mind
Use the Cookie settings link in the footer of any page. If you turn something off, we delete the cookies it set and reload the page so that it stops running. You can also delete cookies in your browser settings at any time.
Who else sees your information
- Our hosting provider, which stores the site and its server logs.
- Google (Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Google AdSense, YouTube), but only for the categories you have agreed to. Google's own policy is at policies.google.com/privacy.
- AcyMailing, the newsletter software, which runs on our own hosting.
Google may process this information outside the United Kingdom, including in the United States. Where that happens, the transfer relies on the UK extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or on the International Data Transfer Agreement.
This site links to other websites. Once you follow a link, that site's own privacy policy applies, and we have no control over what it does.
Your rights
Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation you have the right to ask us for a copy of your personal information, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict how we use it, to receive it in a portable form, and to withdraw consent at any time. Withdrawing consent does not affect anything done before you withdrew it.
To exercise any of these, email
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, or by telephone on 0303 123 1113. We would rather you raised it with us first, so that we can put it right.
Children
This site is not aimed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has given us their information, email us and we will delete it.
Security
The site is served only over an encrypted HTTPS connection, and account passwords are stored as one-way hashes rather than as readable text. No website can promise perfect security, but we take it seriously and keep the software up to date.
Changes to this policy
If we change what the site does, we will change this page and update the date at the top. If the change affects something you have consented to, we will ask you again.
